Maine Governor Paul LePage is a fan of cruel execution methods.

The last time LePage was in the national news, he was making racist comments about how drug dealers with names like “D-Money, Smoothie, and Shifty” were coming into Maine from New York and Connecticut to sell heroin and impregnate “young, white” girls. Well, it turns out LePage has a plan for D-Money & Co.—he wants to chop their heads off. “What we ought to do is bring the guillotine back,” LePage said today in a radio interview while talking about Maine’s drug problem. “We could have public executions and we could even have which hole it falls in.”

LePage also said, “I think the death penalty should be appropriate for people who kill Mainers. ... We should give them an injection of the stuff they sell.”

These remarks are so unhinged they pass beyond normal politics into the realm of performance art. To be sure, in the age of Donald Trump, we’re well used to political rhetoric completely divorced from reality. Still, no one flies into the clouds of racist buffoonery quite so quickly as LePage.
