Today I saw Rudy Giuliani make a couple of appearances in upstate South Carolina. In the afternoon he dropped in at Spill the Beans, a charming ice cream shop outside of Greenville. (As I parked my car, a radio advertisement was guaranteeing termite-free mulch.) Squeezing into the packed cafe--surrounded by his menacing coterie of private bodyguards (some of whom could pass for Blackwater employees)--Rudy delivered quick remarks notable for their square focus on Hillary Clinton. "I have a list of how much money Hillary is going to cost you!" Rudy said. "She wants to spend money like George McGovern and she wants to raise taxes like Walter Mondale." Rudy entirely ignored his primary rivals--until a reporter asked him to respond to Mitt Romney's "lawyers" line from Tuesday night's debate. "The honest truth? Mitt made a mistake," Giuliani replied. He added that Romney was wrong to argue that in the face of an imminent threat, as Rudy put it, "the first thing you do is consult with the lawyers." (Which happens to be a total distortion of what Romney actually said). A few hours later Romney Rudy [oops: long day--ed.] was in Rock Hill, speaking at a York County Republican Party dinner. A perhaps 10-year-old girl kicked things off with an a capella version of Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be an American" before Rudy hit the stage. Once again he lit into Hillary. But the real star of his speech, oddly enough, was the new French president Nicolas Sarkozy, whose vision of lower taxes and school choice Rudy gushed over. Should Hillary be elected and steer America towards "socialized medicine," Giuliani argued, America will become like France (quel dommage!) just as Sarkozy finally Americanizes France. "Let's [govern] based on American principles," Giuliani declared, "not foreign principles." The crowd loved it. Tomorrow Rudy's in Columbia and then Charleston to announce an endorsement (all we know is it's not the governor). More on that to come. --Michael Crowley
