In response to Chris's post on the upcoming NBA season, commenter vcolatrino writes, "No offense, Chris, but the baseball postseason begins today, and we're getting posts about what may happen in the NBA playoffs nine months from now? ... I would love to see someone at the Plank resurrect the baseball playoffs blog." Let no one suggest we don't respond to consumer sentiment! I'm personally still trying to decide whether or not I agree with the Red Sox' decision to take the long series with the extra off day in their matchup with the Angels. (Since the Sox finished with the top seed in the AL by virtue of winning the season series with Cleveland, they got to decide whether they wanted the long series or the short series.) The question really boils down to whether you want your number two starter to be available to pitch twice, or whether you want to use your number four starter (and force your opponent to do the same). At first the Sox' decision seemed a bit puzzling, since the Angels' number two starter (Kelvim Escobar) is better than the Sox' (Daisuke Matsuzaka), while the Sox were thought to have a deeper rotation. Now, though, with the revelation that Tim Wakefield's back injury is keeping him off the roster for the series, their decision makes a little more sense. Still, I would think the prospect of facing Lackey and Escobar four times in a five-game series would have led the Sox to take their chances with a Jon Lester-Joe Saunders matchup in Game 4. Meanwhile, even though they knocked out my hometown team on a highly questionable call, I've got to pull for the Rockies to win it all. They're just an incredibly fun team to watch--particularly Troy Tulowitzki, who's like an Omar Vizquel clone at shortstop but with more power and no receding hairline (yet). --Josh Patashnik
