Last week, Eve reported that the real news at the Petraeus testimony came from Ambassador Ryan Crocker, who painted a much bleaker picture of the situation in Iraq than essentially any other administration official to date. Today Crocker is in the news again, this time for condemning the Department of Homeland Security's resettlement process for Iraqi refugees. He describes the process as being hopelessly slow and bogged down in red tape, and estimates that it could take two years to admit just the refugees who have already been designated for resettlement in the United States, to say nothing of the streams of refugees who continue to flee Iraq. (Anyone not already convinced that the U.S. has an obligation to help Iraqis who have put their lives on the line by working with American forces should read George Packer's TNR essay on the subject from last year.) One might wonder why a Bush administration official like Crocker is willing to criticize the administration's own policy. No doubt it's partly a testament to just how dysfunctional the refugee-resettlement process is. Beyond that, though, perhaps Crocker is a bit peeved that, as the Washington Post reported at the time, he had to take a commercial flight to Washington to testify before Congress while General Petraeus got his own military plane. --Josh Patashnik
