Meet Jose Carranza, the 28-year-old illegal immigrant from Peru who's been charged in the horrendous triple murder in Newark. Chances are you'll be hearing a lot more about him over the course of the presidential campaign. Newt Gingrich has already blasted President Bush and Congress for going on vacation "while young Americans are being massacred by people who should not be here." Tom Tancredo flew to New Jersey yesterday to declare that "Newark and its political leadership share a degree of responsibility" for the killings. And now Mitt Romney has released a radio ad in Iowa and New Hampshire that takes a swipe at Rudy Giuliani on immigration--and tries to associate him with the Newark killings--by attacking so-called "Sanctuary Cities." The ad begins:

Immigration laws don't work if they're ignored. That's the problem with cities like Newark, San Francisco and New York City that adopt sanctuary policies.

Good to see that, thanks to Carranza, Newark has now joined San Francisco and NYC in the Republican pantheon of godless, liberal places. How long until some enterprising GOP presidential candidate uses this image in an ad? Somewhere Hulk Hogan isn't smiling. --Jason Zengerle
