I agree with Mike and Eve that the YouTube debate was (snowman aside) refreshing. However, it's not much of a surprise that regular old Americans have a more genuine approach to the issues that matter-not to mention a better sense of humor--than the usual cast of overpaid and self-serious newscasters. At least Anderson Cooper didn't burst into tears at the Darfur camp video. As for winners, Hillary, once again, was impressive whereas Obama's lack of experience still peeks through-his plan for a diplomatic surge in Iraq was nearly "Department of Peace"-like in its pie-in-the-sky idealism-and his remark about talking to Cuba was a teachable moment on how to lose the Miami vote in one fell swoop. But, that said, there's something about Hillary's pitch perfect answers that unnerved me. On "Hardball" recently Chris Matthews asked Mike what the women at TNR think of Hillary--Chris, for crying out loud, invite one of us on the show if you want to find that out! But speaking just for myself I'm really torn about her. She's clearly mastered her material better than anyone (and her YouTube video showed a hell of a lot more flair than, say, Chris Dodd's which made him seem like the kid in class who didn't quite get the assignment) but I can't shake the sense that she enjoys giving the teacher-approved right answer more than giving an unpopular answer she believes to be right. And when she makes a rare fumble, it's not--unlike Obama--because of a lack of experience but because of a lack of honesty. Consider the question about whether the candidates sent/ send their children to public or private schools: Hillary reiterated an old Clinton line: that the reason Chelsea went to Sidwell was to protect her privacy-otherwise she would happily have sent her to Ballou right? Obama, on the other hand, observed that everyone on stage had the money to get their kid into either private school or the best public school districts, which, as he rightly notes, are pretty much the same thing. This is the sort of honest answer that might explain why the CNN focus group Eve mentions puts Obama on top. --Katherine Marsh
