A final note from New Hampshire: On Friday evening I caught a Hillary Clinton campaign rally in a downtown Manchester park. Bill was there, too, and the two put on a good show. It's true, as everyone says, that Bill overshadows Hillary. He's smoother and warmer and speaks in more natural cadences than his wife. Hillary's speech--focused on health care, the plight of the middle class, and America's standing in the world--wasn't too bad, but it dragged on tediously at times and she occasionally adopted a slightly hectoring tone. At times even Bill seemed to tune out his wife. He would slouch down, elbows on his knees, and slip into a slackjawed daze--only to snap out of it just in time for the end of an applause line, suddenly looking around with a wistful grin as if whatever it was he hadn't really heard was just marvelous and isn't she terrific? It also seemed that the audience craved more red meat on Iraq than it got. Hillary drew roars of approval when she declared that "we have got to bring our troops out of Iraq as soon as possible." But she then stressed that any Iraq exit must be conducted "responsibly and carefully" and "in a deliberative manner," and it was crickets chirping. Glitches aside, the Bill-Hillary combination is undeniably a powerful one. Bill argues persuasively that his wife is the most qualified non-incumbent candidate in 40 years. And his reference to the distance Manchester's economy has come since the economic doldrums of his first campaign there was a clever reminder that the Clintons know the state intimately. (These points seemed more compelling, at least, than a curious reference Hillary made to her gender as an asset. Joking about an Iowa woman who recently told her that America should elect a woman "because we're really good at cleaning up after people," Hillary declared that she "just might put out an all-points bulletin: Bring your brushes, brooms, and vacuum cleaners. We're gonna clean up Washington after these guys leave in January 2009!" It was an odd rhetorical twist for a feminist who has famously disdained the Tammy Wynette/baking cookies model of womanhood. But any tool at hand, I suppose.) One last footnote: The Clintons had no more enthusiastic cheerleaders than a small clutch of people who cheered them deliriously while mysteriously waving around a foreign flag. I was confused at first until I spotted the soccer jersey worn by a teenage boy in the group: BOSNIA- HERZEGOVINA, it read. These were clearly Bosnians forever grateful for the Clinton administration's Balkan interventions-which had few stronger advocates than Hillary herself. Anyone know how many Bosnians are registered to vote in New Hampshire? P.S. Celine Dion is unbelievably more hideous when blasted over a loud PA system.
