They have only themselves to blame, themselves and the New York Times. Mother is running for president. Father is running --not exactly for re-election but for co-president, so to speak. Daughter is not running for anything. But everybody who is anybody around the family seems to have cooperated with Jodi Kantor, the Times reporter who wrote the too-good-to-be-true story on Chelsea. Chelsea, it seems, may be running for everything. Of course, this invites comment. There are the preposterous assertions. Here's one: "She helped bring in more than $20 million for her father's foundation this fall." If she had not been there, would the cash have disappeared? One thing we do know from the article is that Chelsea is not an idealist as Hillary purported to be almost her entire life. The one charity in which she seems interested is the School of American Ballet, "on whose board she serves." A very respectable philanthropy. But not exactly one that moves the human heart. On the other hand, it probably is a good place to make social contacts with the older set. She used to work for McKinsey where her friends said she earned a "low-six-figure" salary that she had tried to "improve on." She clearly has. She works for an $18 billion hedge fund run by her father's pal Marc Lasry. By the way, Bill works for another pal and political confidante, Ron Burkle. What kind of business advice Bill gives billionaire Ron...well...it's probably a masquerade. And, as for Ron Burkle, a grocer. He also wanted the Wall Street Journal and has enough money to compete for it. The Bancrofts fretted about turning the family heirloom over to Rupert Murdoch. I tend to believe that he will respect the reliability of the WSJ and even its very long (and authoritative) articles on intricate matters. For Burkle, the newspaper would be a plaything.
