I read this article in the Telegraph two weeks ago this coming Sunday. By Matthew d'Ancona, editor of a truly literate conservative publication , The Spectator, it was about the Rt. Hon. the Lord Malloch Brown who, just the other day, was merely Sir Mark Malloch Brown. Malloch Brown is a known British social type, a suck-up to the aristocracy. Except that fromerly the aristocracy believed in white man's burden, and now the aristicracy believes in no man's burden, And, of course, you should never get into a fight ... at least not for principles. But His Lordship--who served directly under the unspeakable Kofi Annan and may well have been his brain--is a bit of a pusher himself. So while he has just been appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs for Asia, Africa and the UN, no one imagines that he will omit America and the Jews from his portfolio, thereby pleasing his immediate boss, David Milliband, even if he outclasses him by being a nobleman. The fact is that Malloch Brown dislikes the U.S., although it is not certain whether he dislikes Israel more. In any case, the d'Ancona article explains the troubles the man in the ermine will cause. Update: An article by Toby Harnden in this morning's Telegraph corrects my posting on His Lordship in at least one way. David Milliband, his boss--the one who appointed him--quite tartly commented on Malloch Brown's comments an impending British breach with the U.S.: "He's been given a very specific job to do by Gordon Brown, he's been asked to work on Africa, on Asia and on U.N. reform." He does have some credentials for the U.N. reform portfolio. He was the architect of the new U.N. Human Rights Council which has so disastrously replaced the Human Rights Commission. Basically, its only agenda item is Israel--which is exactly as the Right Honorable man in ermine would have it.
