I CONFESS. I didn't know who Darryl McDaniels was until I read an article about his political opinions in this week's New York Observer. I am not exactly sure that I know now either. But, to put other rap illiterates in the neighborhood like me, he's the founder of Run-D.M.C., which the weekly paper for the rich Upper East Side characterizes as "the immortal, pioneering rap group [that] ... smashed Billboard records with songs like 'Walk This Way,' 'Raising Hell' and 'My Adidas'." Wow! As I said, I didn't know any of this. And, of course, like those of you to whom I've just given this information, I now understand why the Observer ran a 2/3 page article with the headline, "A Rap Legend Digs Hillary - Also, Obama." Forget it Barack. You are toast with D.M.C. You are toast even though: "You know what I like about Barack Obama? He is probably the best man for the job because he don't really got to worry about people, taking people's sides. You know what I'm saying?" Not exactly. "Like Hillary has people she dealt with for years and sometimes she might have to make a decision and tell these people, 'F you [this is the Observer's demure abbreviation], I got to do this' and they're going to get mad at her. But with Barack right now, he can look at the whole landscape." It goes on and on like this, finally to his detriment. That "F you" competence is a big asset for Hillary. D.M.C. is also for Hillary "because it's gangsta." A wonderful compliment, truly wonderful. And the "rap legend" came to her fund-raiser at the "swanky Capitale nightclub in Manhattan" (how come I never heard of it?) "to experience something I can talk to my grandkids about." How touching besides. The headliners at this bash were Bill Clinton--I know who he is--and Christina Aguilera, of whom I have not the faintest idea. Is this what they read at 740 Park? I DO KNOW WHO STEVEN SPIELBERG IS. But, frankly, I don't really care who he is for either, and I doubt that many people do. Still, Spielberg thinks that he's an important influence on the voters. So he issued a statement, a nothing, blah-blah statement, which he appears to think is of great import: "I've taken the time to familiarize myself with the impressive field of Democratic candidates and am convinced that Hillary Clinton is the most qualified candidate to lead us from her first day in the White House. Hillary is a strong leader and is respected the world over. As president, she will bring America back together, rebuild our prestige abroad and ensure our protection here at home." "I've taken the time to familiarize myself ..." What pomposity. Who wrote this verbiage? Certainly not Tony Kushner. Maybe Spielberg wrote it himself. In any case, Hillary's campaign put this blah-blah on its web site, and the New York Post reported it this Thursday. Presumably others too. In the Post's smart-assed way the headline read, "Hill wins Steve stakes." Then the subhead explained what it meant: "Spielberg backs her." The drama over who Spielberg is supporting for president is something I just don't understand. Is Spielberg a political tactician or a moral philosopher? Why should his writing checks and, if he's not too busy, actually voting for Hillary be of such interest? But, as I said above, maybe it isn't. Or some people might be interested in what a celebrity does but don't truly care about why he does it. Like trawling the Hollywood hills gawking at homes of the stars. The same Post article tells us that, among Hillary's other Hollywood backers, are also Eva Longoria and Mike Myers. All I can say is "Wow!" again. I don't know who these folks are either. But, since Hugh Hefner is also supporting Hillary, some people might just wonder why. Hefner is not actually a wholesome name, and neither is Clinton. So maybe it is something about belief. I might want to know why Hef actually likes Hill. What is it in her that gets a rise from him? And, while we're talking real politics, I'd want to know if Spielberg knows something that we don't. Like, as he painfully and dreadfully explained to us in his film "Munich," that there is no real difference between terrorists and those who go after them. Does Hillary believe that? I am certain not, absolutely certain. But maybe Spielberg thinks she does. What else does he think she believes in? Maybe it's just that she "is a strong leader and is respected the world over." Bullshit words.
