The mandate of heaven seems to have fallen from Deval Patrick. At least that's what the Globe reported on Thursday: "Missteps test faith of Patrick devotees." Now, these are real devotees, and they are really reeling. Patrick ran a populist campaign, and that's why he defeated the dumb and remote Republican swell who was his opponent...and why he won so handily. Alas, he turns out not to be such a populist, as I pointed out here, here, here, here, and here. What apparently broke the morale of his enthusiasts was his call to former Treasury secretary Robert Rubin of Citigroup on behalf of a sleazy company called Ameriquest that Patrick served for two years as a highly paid director. The Globe's cartoonist Dan Wasserman captures the two months Patrick has served as governor by a devastating few lines depicting a clueless man. PS: And the vox populi is heard from directly.
