"I like them. They're elegant. They have a ball pleat at the top...He seems more, not relaxed, but more personally engaging...He's very charismatic, whereas, his method of delivery is much less formal. And these (draperies) speak of that to me." The "he' in the gushing ramble is Deval Patrick. This incomprehensible hash was served up by Thursday's Boston Globe as the consensus of Boston decorators on the updating of the governor's office. The draperies only cost about half the total sum of $27,387 spent on this small part of Patrick's program. The Globe was apoplectic about it, or so its front page news stories about his car, his wife's assistant, his furnishings seemed to suggest. For example: "Patrick to repay taxpayers for decor" and "Patrick: "'We screwed up' on spending". I myself wrote that the governor had a weakness for grandiosity. I actually don't think he should have paid for redecorating his office. And, frankly, I don't really care that he ordered himself a Cadillac. But I was troubled by his made-up story that the State Police wouldn't allow him a different car. Anyway, he will now be watched as if Massachusetts were still the Massachusetts Bay Colony and living under a strict Puritan regimen. But he does have a penchant for grandeur as his multi-day inauguration showed. There was also a bit too much religion for me, especially in that he emerged from the community of liberals who usually are absolutist on the iron door between faith and politics. In any case, Jeff Jacoby has a provocative column also in the Globe, "Governor Deluxe makes no apologies."
