On the evidence in Talkbacks to The Spine, some readers are annoyed with me for what they think is my picking on poor George Soros. Well, if you care about responsible capitalism--which maybe Soros doesn't--the performance of Jet Blue in the past few days has been nothing less than appalling. I know that Soros can't be blamed for the weather. (That's clearly George Bush's fault.) But the founder and leading stockholder of an airline does have some duty to its passengers. The stock is not doing badly, down to $13.56 from its year high of of $17.02, but way up from its low of $8.93. The stock price was up 64 cents on Friday when the brittleness of the company was most apparent. The New York Times published an article by Jeff Bailey on Sunday showing just how messed up Jet Blue is. It cancelled 861 flights between Wednesday and Saturday, though the storm was over by Wednesday night. Does not this carrier actually plan for contingencies? Why did weather calamities hit this airline so badly? Or, as a Jet Blue spokeswoman admitted on Friday, "Sometime in the afternoon, it just fell apart." By then, every one else was running on time. Oops! Just as I write, there appears on the Times website another article for Monday's paper by Bailey that's even more devastating than the one in the Sunday edition. The CEO is mortified, and it's a good thing that he is. The question is: is Soros mortified? The article details some intra-airline comparisons. Maybe George Soros can't be bothered about this investment of his. After all, he is so busy getting the U.S. to atone for its sins.
