Am I wrong to recall that the big rally for Darfur in Washington was (how do I say this politely?) very disproportionately a gathering of my congregation? Of course, "never again" means more to my congregation than it does to others. And it was true also for the victims of starvation and other forms of Nigerian genocide in Biafra. You would think that the churches that failed speak and act when the entire Jewish people was endangered and when nearly half of them were murdered would be a bit more sensitive now to the Arab Muslim genocide of black Muslims in Sudan and in Chad. Yes, it is true that some churches are doing something ... but not much. In the meantime, there is hardly a synagogue or temple in America that isn't doing something for the victims of Darfur. And now in Israel. There has been a protest and refugee aid movement on a small flame there. The Israelis, after all, do have their own problems with neighboring genocidalists and may be looking forward to an Iranian bomb aimed at them, besides. But the Darfur movement is growing. Here's an article by Daphne Berman in Friday's Haaretz about a rally scheduled for on Monday in Jerusalem's Zion Square. (It was there in 1975 that I had my own first close encounter with Palestinian terrorism. But that's another matter.) This "demo," as we used to call it in the sixties, is being mobilized by an unusual combination of Anglos and yeshiva and seminary students. Please read this and think about whether the Democrats shouldn't make helping Darfur live a part of their program. Thus far, George Bush, who I know can't do anything good, is the only one willing to step up to the bat. The rest--Nancy Pelosi, et cetera--are waiting for the United Nations to do something. They will wait for the coming of the messiah, who I don't think even these yeshiva and seminary students believe is coming soon. Now, can you imagine something like this happening in any other Middle Eastern country?
