Many thanks to all who responded thoughtfully to my PowerPoint query. Further on the same subject, via PZ Myers again, a PowerPoint primer. (Maybe this entry marks a step in the direction of rjb9's idea that there be a Strunk and White for presentation software.) For my own part, as I said, I use Apple's Keynote software for undergraduate lectures and for research presentations that require graphs, tables, or other multimedia elements. (I prefer Keynote over PowerPoint, even though I know few people really have the choice--but if you're a Mac user, you might look into it.) Basically, I think Jacob Levy correctly suggests that reflexively reducing prose to bullet points is, well, pointless.
