During a town hall event in South Carolina on Tuesday night, CNN host Chris Cuomo asked the Vermont senator to comment on President Barack Obama’s proposal to close the Guantanamo Bay prison.
Sanders reiterated his support for the base’s closure by pointing out that the well-documented conditions of the military prison and the mistreatment of its inhabitants make the United States look hypocritical to the international community, which has already lost a great deal of its confidence in our country’s ability to act responsibly.
He also commented on his past criticism of the CIA, which he suggested should be shut down.
“The CIA plays an important roll. But have they done things which they should not have done on behalf of the United States government? Absolutely.”
