Today Pope Francis turns 79, and he’s celebrating with the same mixture of awkwardness and fun we all do. Yesterday the pontiff was serenaded by the crowd during a general audience, and surprised with a sombrero-shaped birthday cake gifted to him by a Mexican journalist in anticipation of his February trip to Mexico. Then the President of Ukraine congratulated Francis on his 80th birthday, when it is in fact his 79th. As birthday tidings poured in from around the world, CBS reported that Francis’s critics have gone on hating, as well they should: no birthday is complete without a little resentment toward the birthday person.
