It’s almost as if many people in America harbor deep antipathy to minorities.

Washington Post’s Greg Sargent poses a challenge to those who say Trump’s popularity is a result of widespread economic and national security-related anxiety. Specifically, why is tons of racism an indispensable part of the appeal?

Even if worries about those threats are understandable, what does it mean that the viciously xenophobic strain of Trump’s message appears to be necessary to get these voters to believe those worries are being adequately spoken to?
