Obama has one question for his successor: “Why, oh why, would you want my job?”

That’s the upshot of what the president told NPR’s Steve Inskeep:

So I might just ask somebody, why do you want to do this? And I suppose they’d give a cliche answer because that’s what candidates do, but I will tell you as president, if you are interested just because you like the title or you like the trappings or you like the power or the fame or the celebrity, that side of it wears off pretty quick. At least it has for me.

The problem is that our culture still promulgates the idea that the president is all powerful and all important Leader of The Free World, ignoring the very real constraints to presidential authority. The Green Lantern view of the presidency not only encourages egoists like Trump to run for president, but also leads voters to support them.
