Twitter is considering upping its character limit from 140 to 10,000. (Though if you really want to, you can tweet 10,000 characters right now.)

Re/code’s Kurt Wagner reports that changes may soon be coming to the struggling social network:

Twitter is currently testing a version of the product in which tweets appear the same way they do now, displaying just 140 characters, with some kind of call to action that there is more content you can’t see. Clicking on the tweets would then expand them to reveal more content. The point of this is to keep the same look and feel for your timeline, although this design is not necessarily final, sources say.

There are lots of potential takeaways here. One is that Twitter is desperate enough for a jumpstart that it will throw anything at the wall to see what sticks—and change its entire makeup if necessary. Another is that this may be (more) bad news for media:

The 140 character limit is what defines Twitter, along with the chronological timeline (which the company also would like to ditch), but it’s also increasingly irrelevant. Linked tweets and Twitter essays (pioneered by the New Republic’s Jeet Heer) are effective workarounds. And screenshots allow you to tweet 10,000 characters right now:
