As recounted at the blog Rochester Subway, Bowie pleaded not guilty to felony drug possession after he was arrested in his hotel suite at the American Rochester Hotel on March 21, 1976. The Democrat and Chronicle the next day reported, under the headline “‘Pot’ Holds Rock Singer,” that Bowie had skipped town after posting bail. But not before “the greatest photo in [Rochester Police Department] history was taken,” the blog writes.
