The beleaguered ex-infielder announced on Wednesday that he plans to retire when his contract expires, which isn’t until the end of the 2017 season.

As sports retirements go, the New York Yankees do them better than anyone. In recent years, the team paraded its beloved future Hall of Famers Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter across the baseball world for season-long farewell tours. But for A-Rod, who is neither beloved nor a likely Hall of Famer, telegraphing his retirement two full seasons in advance is an odd move.

So prepare your heckles and snarky tweets, baseball fans: You’ve only got 19 months left to kick A-Rod around.
