The Fung Wah bus, or Chinatown bus, is something that any twenty-something traveling from Boston to New York (or vice versa) has probably experienced. For $15, you can save a lot of money and get to your destination fast. Sure, you may risk your life doing so, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than taking Amtrak or flying. Courtesy of my mother--who sends me these stories whenever they occur (i.e., with disturbing frequency) so as to dissuade me from ever riding the bus again (the first and only time I did she called me at least every half hour to make sure I was alive)--a Fung Wah bus careened onto a concrete barrier at a toolboth on the Massachusetts Turnpike, not far out of Boston, today after the driver pulled into an automobile-only lane. "I go the wrong way, you know," the driver told the press. "I see the sign is 'Auto Only.'"

The driver was taken to the Weston State Police barracks for questioning. Police confirmed that he speaks broken English. Federal law requires all commercial bus drivers to be able to speak conversational English.

Somebody ought to call Lou Dobbs or Tom Tancredo so they can make a national crisis out of this minor accident. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in this latest mishap, which can't be said of some earlier accidents. This is the third such accident Fung Wah has experienced in the past year alone. Senator Chuck Schumer has rightly called for more oversight of these wild-west type bus companies. Some of my friends suspect that these accidents are caused by rival Chinese gangs. --James Kirchick
