The Sudanese government and the most formidable rebel group in Darfur have signed a declaration of intent paving the way for peace talks over the coming months, Sudan’s ambassador to the United Nations said Tuesday.

Sudanese forces bombed rebel positions in Darfur on Wednesday, with the ink barely dry on a deal between Khartoum and the strongest rebel group that was hailed as a turning point in efforts to end the six-year conflict.
