As expected, the seventh Star Wars film raked in cash over the weekend, posting the strongest ever opening night, December debut, and domestic debut. The Force Awakens only landed the second-largest global debut, however—$517 million to Jurassic World’s $525 million—but unlike its fellow reboot/sequel, it made its money without China, which is a pretty big country. (The Force Awakens also set records for Imax debut, highest per-theater average, best Friday gross, pre-sales, and was the biggest opening ever in the U.K., Russia, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Denmark, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Ukraine, Iceland, Serbia and New Zealand.)
Of course, The Force Awakens most likely won’t even touch the first Star Wars film, A New Hope. Adjusted for inflation, that movie made $1,239,677,676.80. Of course, as The Daily Beast notes, it isn’t 1977 anymore: back then, “there was far less competition, with only a few movies released per weekend compared to the estimated 15-17 movies released every weekend in 2015.”
