Trump is a habitual interrupter, drowning out attacks in a snowy fuzz of crosstalk. Cruz attempted to combat his interruptions by telling Trump to take it easy. “Count to ten, Donald,” he said at one point. “Breathe, breathe, breathe,” he said at another. (“When you’re done with yoga, can I get a question?” Marco Rubio interjected.) It may have achieved the effect of slowing Trump down, but it’s also a passive-aggressive move that is more than a little smarmy. After all, there’s nothing more grating than being told to relax.
