Saoirse Ronan is taking on another Ian McEwan adaptation.

Focus Features

You might remember the Irish-American actress as Briony, the sister in Atonement (2007) who ruins Keira Knightley and James McAvoy’s lives. Now, Ronan, fresh off her Oscar-nominated turn in Brooklyn, is turning her pale-blue gaze to McEwan’s On Chesil Beach. The story of two sexually repressed newlyweds on their wedding night, On Chesil Beach seems like a good fit for Ronan, who excels in wordlessly suggesting emotional turmoil. Plus, the movie will be produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley, the team behind Carol, who know all about bringing sexual repression to the screen.
